Starting a journey to move towards connecting the body, heart and mind.
There are moments in the treatment studio that full me with wonder. Even now after 17 years, I will be working with a client and see their body, heart and mind connect in a new way that gives them ease and freedom. It’s a spine thrilling moment.
This connection can sound so obvious when first mentioned; “I have a mind, and a heart, and a body, of course I connect with all three”, but do we?
My work is based on the physical reality that the body provides space for three brains; your mind, heart and stomach. Then I subdivide to the conscious mind and subconscious mind, heart and stomach, and then we work with the communication systems that connect them all to enable you to start to feel the whole body connect. In short, we work with a lot.
Connective Movement helps to expound this into a daily existence. Through working with touch and combined movement sequencing, we find rhythm and bounce, fluid spirals and a grounded personal dance that allows us to move into a new space of ease.
So why do we combine touch and movement sequencing to allow connection and freedom to happen?
Touch, along with the other primary senses, starts the communication between the brains. Our skin is the doorway to such wonder! Yet it is discarded and not talked about, and I personally believe this is due to society’s fear that touch is something rude, intrusive or abusive.
So let us talk about it a lot! Touch starts the endocrine system to jiggle about in a new way and produce different chemicals for us to enjoy; happy, peaceful, fear, flight, delight, they are all boosted by touch. Don’t believe me? Try to imagine great sex without a caress - touch has to come in to it. Want to feel calm and supported? Wrap a blanket around you and the touch of it on your skin will tell your parasympathetic nervous system to kick in and calm down. Once the skin is allowed to start sending the signals it can give us so much fulfilment.
When we are in a yoga class (or another form of exercise), often we can feel our areas of tightness. I was in the middle of my morning yoga practice this morning and my left shoulder, as always, had a bit of a moan whilst in Down Dog. My left shoulder doesn’t like retraction and throws itself forward. Classically a Bodyworker will look at my left side and say that it is showing weakness that should be corrected.
Rather than force a shoulder back into a place that we feel it “should be”, why don’t we start to have a conversation within our bodies and ask why it doesn’t like retraction? If we don’t ask, we will never know why the shoulder has decided that throwing itself forward is a functional form of disfunction.
How do we start this conversation? We touch it, we sink into it and we allow it time to tell us what is going on.
In the quiet of your own space, simply place a soft hand on a part of your body that is grumping at you and don’t do anything but listen. What is it telling you? Is it cool or hot? Is there a lightness or a darkness to it? Does it feel old or new? Gently ask your body to speak clearly and for your hands to be receptors of information as well as givers of touch.
This is the beginning of connecting in with the movement of your body. Later we will look at how we move on from the questions and into a new space. But for now allow your hands to become ears, restful and with no judgment or preconceived ideas. Then come back and check in with the next part of Connective Movement.
